Think of the most exciting, important, high-stakes, political debate that you can devise inside your mind, one that is so pertinent to the world we live in today that its happening would almost certainly reshape the world around it.

Have you got it? Good.

That was fun, wasn't it? Oh, by the way, this thing, I guess, is happening…

On February 25th, former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton will share a stage at Radio City Music Hall in New York City…

A press release from the group said the two men will discuss "topics ranging from the economy to foreign policy."

A spokesperson for Madison Square Garden Entertainment, which is hosting the event, declined to discuss what, if anything, the former presidents are being paid. Organizers at these sorts of events generally do not disclose compensation.

You know what, though? This debate does have the potential to really cause some major waves in my Fantasy American Politics league.

A little more than a year after John McCain threw conservative debutant Sarah Palin her coming out party, the country still finds itself with a chronic case of Wasilla Fever!

Just take Levi Johnston. Not only is he getting his own not-brave-enough-to-get-naked spread in Gay Fancy Magazine (or something), but he's also having tales sung of his brave adventures by ironic-pianist balladeer Ben Folds, whom, I promise, Levi Johnston has never ever ever heard of.

But what about Sarahcuda? Where's her folk ballad? She's twice the folksy ballaverick her granddaughter's father is. Well, she doesn't get a song; she gets a whole opera!

"Say It Ain't So, Joe," a presentation by Guerilla Opera, opens Saturday at Boston Conservatory's Zack Box Theater. The work is composer Curtis Hughes' musical take on America's favorite moose-hunting winker, you betcha. It focuses on that contentious — and sometimes comical — debate from October 2008 between Palin and Joe Biden…

"It is a tragedy about Palin," he said. "Both characters view themselves as saviors of America. And even though I'm not trying to hammer people on the head with a single interpretation, you know that Biden will triumph in the end. But the central figure certainly is Sarah Palin. I found myself having this odd pathos for her, a pathos I would not have felt if I were not writing music for her."

What an interesting coincidence! I've found myself with an odd pathos for a lot of things for about a year or so now.

Blogging on Huffington Post, the only guy who's maybe more neurotic than me, Larry David, admits that dealing with this election cycle is like "waiting for the results of a biopsy" except worse, because "if the biopsy comes back positive, there's still a potential cure"…

The one concession I've made to maintain some form of sanity is that I've taken to censoring my news, just like the old Soviet Union. The citizenry (me) only gets to read and listen to what I deem appropriate for its health and well-being.

Sure, there are times when the system breaks down. Michele Bachmann got through my radar this week, right before bedtime. That's not supposed to happen. That was a lapse in security, and I've had to make some adjustments.

The debates were particularly challenging for me to monitor. First I tried running in and out of the room so I would only hear my guy. This worked until I knocked over a tray of hors d'oeuvres. "Sit down or get out!" my host demanded. "Okay," I said, and took a seat, but I was more fidgety than a ten-year-old at temple. I just couldn't watch without saying anything, and my running commentary, which mostly consisted of "Shut up, you prick!" or "You're a fucking liar!!!" or "Go to hell, you cocksucker!" was way too distracting for the attendees, and finally I was asked to leave.

He should try liveblogging his vitriol. Or massive alcohol intake.

Either, I find to be very therapeautic.

Regarding last night's debate, everyone's talking about good ol' Joe the plumber. He's like the fictional Joe Six-Pack, in that both can't vote. (Although I'm sure ACORN has a few dozen Joe Six-Packs registered.)

But let's not forget McCain's invocation of that other hard-working American who struggled so hard to reach the top only to be denied by Obama…

"On Sept. 24, Hillary Rodham Clinton received a surprise phone call from the man she’s often denounced as an economic know-nothing: John McCain.

The GOP nominee… wanted to pick the senator's brain about her new proposal to have the federal government buy up bad mortgages and renegotiate terms more favorable to homeowners on verge of default…

Clinton responded coolly. "She didn't engage him, she just said, 'Thank you' and heard him out.'"

Hillary Clinton, true to her campaign promises, is really good at answering phones. I can only imagine the awkwardness of that conversation.

McCain: Hello, my friend, can I steal your economic plan, use it against your party and then credit you as my source in order to establish myself as a maverick?

Clinton: Ummm… No.

McCain: Pleeeeeeeeeeeaase!

Clinton: Fine, whatever. Just stop crying.

And that was still better written than the last season of The West Wing.

Three weeks later, as well as in last night's debate, McCain was flaunting his plan's similarities to Clinton's, because nothing gets his base more excited than a woman in business casual attire.

If you spent last night playing a debate drinking game that required taking a shot every time a candidate mentioned "Joe the Plumber," then you are no doubt reading this from the stomach pump ward of your local hospital.

Well on the topic of shots, Joe Biden has been taking a few of his own — at Joe the Plumber…

"You notice John [McCain] continues to cling to the notion of this guy Joe the plumber," Biden said on NBC's Today show. "I don't have any Joe the plumbers in my neighborhood that make $250,000 a year that are worried."

"The Joe the plumbers in my neighborhood, the Joe the cops in my neighborhood, the Joe the grocery store owners in my neighborhood — they make, like 98 percent of the small businesses, less than $250,000 a year," said the Democratic VP nominee…

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the mean annual wage for plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters in the United States in 2007 was $47,350.

Biden's point was that McCain kept focusing on a man who was a statistical anomaly rather than an average American worker. Those people, Biden argues, "are going to do very well under us, and they're going to be in real tough shape under John McCain."

And strange as it was that Joe the Plumber was mentioned in lieu of a typical middle class American, it's equally strange that he was mentioned more times than George the President, Henry the Treasury Secretary, Sarah the Moosedresser, Jeremiah the Preacher and Bill the Unrepentant Terrorist combined.
