11:05 – That's the night for us. Here's some video of the liberal blogosphere reacting to Obama's surprise appearance to get you all hot and bothered for tomorrow night.

11:00 – Well, that was a kind of well-put-together forty minutes. They must have gotten some help from that former Republican guy. – DDC

10:57 - Aaaaww… It's almost like the Obamas and the Clintons like each other. – DDC

10:54 – Holy shit, it's Barack Obama. What's he doing here at the DNC? – DDC

10:53 - Thunderous applause here in The Tent. Well, it's clear that the liberals liked his speech. – DDC

10:49 – From the Comments: Passerby25 – " 'Freudian Slip?' Kinda odd that it happened twice tonight… and that you seemed so ready to respond to it." – MK

10:40 – Is "George… I mean, John McCain '08" a new bumper sticker? – DDC

10:39 – Another Freudian slip? Real or not? What do you think? – DDC

10:36 – Excuse me, but I think I have something in my eye. – DDC

10:32 – Biden kinda freaks me out. He almost seems like a person. I don't know how I feel about a person being my vice-president. – DDC

10:31 – Here we go… – DDC

10:29 – Oh, good. No fourth introduction. – DDC

10:28 - "My father, my brother and I married that girl Jill." That's kinky. – DDC

10:25 – When they introduced Beau Biden, I thought they'd mispronounced Joe Biden's name. – DDC

10:24 – Three introductions??? – DDC

10:23 - Can anybody not like Joe Biden? I mean, maybe you don't want him to be vice-president, but can you really not like him? – DDC

10:21 - That's weird. He was just made the VP nominee. How did the get a montage made already? – DDC

10:19 – Did that woman just introduce Joe Biden? What's Nancy Pelosi doing on the stage? Does Joe Biden need two introduction. – DDC

10:08 – That sequence by Steven Spielberg was moving. I can't believe that was by the same guy who produced Back to the Future Part II. – MK

9:57 – Rep. Chet Edwards from Texas is now speaking. This is ironic, because it appears that Barack Obama is not actually going to be on the ballot in Texas. – MK

9:53 – Rear Admiral John Hutson. Uh oh. Not just another soldier, but an anti-Lieberman (meaning former Republican). "The Grand Old Party is no longer grand. It's just old." That's kinda okay. – DDC

9:50 – Jesus. McCain really fucked up giving the Dems an opportunity to use Veterans' rights against him. – DDC

9:48 - General Claudia Kennedy. Can you imagine how tough as nails you have to be to be a woman and a Democrat and still become a three-star general? This person could probably kill me with her eyeballs. – DDC

9:46 – Not a bad job at all, Kerry. Now, please don't say anything else for the rest of the week. – DDC

9:43 - Which is not to say that this is a bad speech. It's not; it's actually pretty good. But, I remember talking on the phone with a good friend of mine while Kerry spoke at the Convention four years ago. And we were both kinda surprised by his speech, saying, "Oh, he's actually kind of presidential. I can kind of imagine him being president." But I don't think either of us was genuinely convinced. – DDC

9:41 - Wow, I can't believe this guy was the Democratic Party's choice for president four years ago. The differences could not be more stark. I wonder if that will help or hurt Obama's choices. – DDC

9:38 - Candidate McCain vs. Senator McCain. "Talk about being for it before you're against it." That's nice. He actually didn't fuck up a joke. – DDC

9:36 – What is "Global AIDS"? That sounds scary. – DDC

9:34 – "Bush, I mean McCain…" OMG, did John Kerry just FAKE a Freudian slip? – MK

9:33 - John Kerry, reporting for duty. Again. – MK

9:30 – Does it make me unpatriotic to say that I think this woman Beth Robinson is kinda hot? – DDC

9:27 – It just got really loud in this Tent. – DDC

9:24 - Oh, wow. President Clinton just compared Barack Obama to President Clinton. – DDC

9:23 – Like me. – DDC

9:22 – Well, I mean, if you're a commie. – DDC

9:21 – This just got really good. – DDC

9:20 - No, wait. I'm thinking of Full House. – DDC

9:19 – "Katrina and Cronyism." I used to love that show. – DDC

9:17 – "…more impressed bu by the power of our power example, than the example of our power." That's good because it's clever. And it's clever because it's good. – DDC

9:15 - Yay, HIV/AIDS! – DDC

9:11 – Wow, he almost seems sincere. (Actually, I do think he really approves of Biden. Also, I'm not sure he wanted Hillary slumming in a VP position.) – DDC

9:08 – Bill Clinton just said that in no uncertain terms he is going to do everything he can to elect Barack Obama. And he wants all Hillary supporters to vote for him. Him, obviously, being Obama. – DDC

9:06 – Global warming jokes always kill. – DDC

9:05 - Oh, so he is going to support Obama. – DDC

9:04 - Let the guy talk! The audience won't let him speak. "Please stop. Please sit, please sit." – DDC

9:02 - Oh! Bill Clinton. Well, that makes sense. – DDC

9:01 - Rep. Kendrick Meek is getting ready to introduce somebody named Bill Klinton. Whoever this guy is, he's gonna have to be good to follow Tom Daschle. – DDC

8:59 – "Chain of Fools"??? Is that really the best choice of music to be played in the middle of a chain of Democratic speakers? – DDC

8:57 – Daschle was wearing a blue and green flag. An odd choice for a political rally. Unless he's secretly the Democratic representative from Sierra Leone. – MK

8:51 – Ok, Tom Daschle just makes me sad. He's, what, the third unemployed guy they've had on the stage this week? – MK

8:49 - Jack Reed gave a decent speech. I think the Democrats might pick up Rhode Island this year. – MK

8:46 – Oh, wait, no. It's Jack Reed. – DDC

8:44 – My mistake. That's Evan Bayh. Was this guy really almost the vice-presidential nominee? – DDC

8:43 – So, here we are. And, for some reason, A. Whitney Brown is up onstage talking about something really boring. – DDC

11:10 – Question: How do you know when you are in a room full of heathen atheist liberals?

Answer: When two pastors come on the TV to deliver a benediction, they mute the TV and tell us to "come upstairs for comedy and beer."

Well… They do make a good point. We're going to go check out this evening's comedy event with Eugene Mirman and Rachel Sklar and a bunch of other people presented by Huff Po's 23/6.

Amen

- MK

11:06 – Allison just bet me five dollars that the story in the media tomorrow is that Hillary Clinton gave too good a speech to show up Barack Obama and make him lose.

I might lose this bet. – DDC

11:01 - The Twin Cities! Bush and McCain! Oh my god! Why did nobody think of that before? Home fucking run! – DDC

11:00 – She's doing a really good job. She should consider running for president one day. – DDC

10:57 – Bill looks proud and happy. I'll bet he even tries to seduce her after this speech. – DDC

10:53 – Clinton's shout out to her companions in the "sisterhood of the traveling pants suits" was pretty funny. However, the close captioner wrote it as "sister hood of the traveling hansards." This is less funny because a hansard is (according to the wikipedia)

"the traditional name for the printed transcripts of parliamentary debates in the Westminster system of government." – MK

10:52 - "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pantsuits." I think she stole that from a blog. – DDC

10:48 – I honestly can't even get into the head of a hardcore Democrat who would vote for McCain over Obama just because Clinton lost. That said, this speech seems really effective for what she's obviously trying to do.

And, let's not forget. She doesn't want her legacy to go down next to Nader's. – DDC

10:47 – Well, out of the gate, she's trying to pull in the PUMAs. (Well, not the PUMAs specifically. Those people are just Republicans.) – DDC

10:45 – She hit the word "Democrat" really hard. I wonder why. – DDC

10:39 – So, what is Hillary gonna say? Adam (from North Decoder), who's sitting right next to me, says she needs to lay superhard into McCain to pull her supporters over to Obama. I hadn't considered that. I assumed she'd just talk Obama up.

If she goes after McCain half as hard as she went after Obama… – DDC

10:37 – Hillary Clinton rock montage! It's for the young people. – DDC

10:33 – Schweitzer's doing a lot better job than I thought he would. – DDC

10:29 - "Even if you drilled in all of John McCain's backyards…" Wow! They are hitting that meme hard. I always thought Democrats were limp-wristed to twist a knife. – DDC

10:28 – John McCain voted against wind energy? Why… why… he hates the atmosphere! – DDC

10:25 – This guy got the worst spot of the convention. Right before Hillary Clinton. He's like Led Zeppelin's opening band. They didn't even try to put somebody interesting before her. Why waste a decent speaker? – DDC

10:21 – Okay, so, I realize that Brian Schweitzer is the Governor of Montana, but, c'mon! A bolo tie? How are you gonna wear a bolo and do your best Woody Allen impression?

This guy just thinks all Democrats who don't live on a mountain are Jewish. – DDC

10:16 – You know what's weird? I grew up in New Jersey and eventually moved to Philadelphia and New York City. I've spent my entire life in cities that are practically indigo. Meeting conservatives, for me, has always been like spotting a Yeti.

And yet, here in this Tent in the middle of the Democratic Convention, suddenly I feel like Newt Gingrich. (Well, that's a stretch. How about Barry Goldwater?) – DDC

10:10 – Apparently Deval Patrick is my Spanish Harlem Mona Lisa. Also, why do Democrats let people from Massachusetts who are not named Kennedy speak? Didn't they learn their lesson last year? – MK

10:07 – That was a very complicated and long baseball joke, but it was kind of funny. Americans like baseball so it should play well. . The set up went on forever, but the punchline was "Bush on third, and stole second." – MK

10:03 – Ted Strickland is talking now. I know the Democrats need Ohio and that's why they let him speak, but you'd think in "a big diverse state" they'd be able to find someone who could kind of sort of modulate his voice to convey emotion. – MK

9:57 – You know how I know I'm in a liberal safe house? They've invested in a screen that makes Mark Warner's teeth look normal sized. This technology must be why Warner believes in science. – MK

9:52 – "If an idea works, it really doesn't matter if it has a D or an R next to it." Just so long as it doesn't have a G next to it.

9:50 – You had me at "In four months, we will have an administration that actually believes in science." – DDC

9:49 – Is Warner telling us to be afraid of China? – DDC

9:47 – George Bush never asked us to step up? That's his biggest problem with George Bush? – DDC

9:45 – So, Mark Warner invented cell phones? – DDC

9:44 – Don't forget. This is the exact space that Barack Obama filled in the 2004 DNC. You know what that means? Mark Warner is a Muslim. – DDC

9:42 – Here's Mark Warmer, the keynote speaker. Is he gonna rip into McCain? I'm so excited. And I just can't hide it. – DDC

9:41 – Please, no more dancing Democrats. – DDC

9:39 – "I'm So Excited!" is playing in the convention center. Allison (see below) just said, "I'd don't like the implication that we're all fucking Barack Obama." I agree. – DDC

9:34 – I'm trying to watch this nice looking lady (Lilly Ledbetter) who's talking about women's issues, and for some reason, soft acoustic guitar rock keeps getting pumped through the speaker system here in The Tent. That's not change I can believe in. – DDC

9:30 – And then he drops "Four More Months"! Who writes this guy's bumper stickers? – DDC

9:29 – Oh, snap! "That's not a maverick, that's a sidekick." – DDC

9:23 – Senator Bob Casey just started talking. See that hair. That's what Joe Biden's would look like without the comb over. Not so bad, huh? There's nothing wrong with just admitted you're going bald. – DDC

9:05 – Kathleen Sebelius is making a Wizard of Oz joke. Because she's from Kansas. Get it? "For John McCain, there's no place like home, or a home, or a home, or a home." – MK

9:02 – I just met aspiring congressman Jared Polis who keeps a diary over at Daily Kos (which I'll provide a link for if/when I find it). I like Jared and here's why: he's a closet nerd. He just told us that he blogs because he, like me, used to go on BBS's on a 300 baud modem. Now that's a guy I can relate to. – MK

9:01 – The sound came on just in time to hear Nancy Floyd of Nth Power. She's the Founder AND Managing Director, don't you know? – MK

8:37 – Here's a guy who's supposedly been hanging around in front of The Tent all day long.

He seems well-intentioned, but you'd think he'd be able to find some better place in Denver to protest than a tent full of the most progressive grass-roots bloggers in the city.

On the other hand, I just posted his picture. – DDC

Update: I just had a nice long with they guy in the picture above. His name is Ben Masel and he ran for U.S. Senate in 2006. He didn't win. But he says that he got more votes than he (and, presumably, a lot of people) thought he would get. – DDC

8:27 – Ok, so I can't hear anything, and by anything I mean Janet Napolitano, but I can see this which is very entertaining. – MK

The biggest story right now is: David Greenberg: Biden's Plagiarism Should Not Be Forgotten. I've also learned that police trapped peaceful protestors in Denver. – MK

8:25 – As soon as we got here to the Big Tent (which, yesterday, I mistakenly called Digg's Big Tent; Digg is one of the sponsors, but this is really all put together mostly by the people at Daily Kos), my computer decided to join the website in its protest of America. It just refused to work properly. Anyway, I decided to leave it be for a little while to take some pictures (which I'll start posting in a bit). Since I came back, it seems to be playing nicer. – DDC

8:02 – Some band is playing. Looks like two guitarists, a cello and a fiddler. I bet they're awesome. I wish I could hear them. – MK

7:51 - Robin Golden, an auto worker from Grand Rapids Michigan is on the TV right now. I don't know more about him because they still inexplicably have the sound off here. Our new friend, Allison from First Draft correctly points out that though he is probably a nice guy, and a good Democrat, he does look like he just rolled out of bed.

He also doesn't seem to have bothered to tuck in his shirt. – MK

7:33 – Sitting here in the blog area of The Big Tent on night two and just met Matthew Taylor and Anastasia Kousakis who are here representing the Progressive Book Club, which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. They are predicting a completely saccharine Hillary Clinton tonight, with no innuendo or damning with faint praise.

Their logic is that everyone is watching her so hawkishly for any sign of dissent that she can't afford to be anything but super sweet. – MK

7:23 – Testing, testing. Is this thing on? Is this thing on? – DDC

11:03 – So the plus sides of The Big Tent are definitely the company (thanks to our friends at Fire Dog Lake, Group News Blog, and Daily Kos) the free food, and the free beer. The only real downside was that they didn't turn on the sound until after Pelosi spoke, and when they did, they nearly blasted my ear drums out.

Looking forward to the backhanded compliments of Clinton tomorrow night. Headed out to a party, or Rock the Vote, or something. We'll be Twittering.

11:00 - That is what you call a SLAM DUNK! – Dylan Ris

10:58 – You know, satellite delay really takes the warmth out of an otherwise incredibly sweet father daughter interaction. That was really cute though. So who thinks the "what city are you in?" question was a genuine ad-lib? – MK

10:57 - Oh my god, someone needs to shut that kid up! This is proof that Obama is soft on insolence. – DDC

10:55 – "Isn't She Lovely?"??? That's kind of a degrading choice isn't it? Not degrading, exactly. But, not necessarily designed to pull in the vanishing Hillary crowd, is it? – DDC

10:54 - And the crowd goes wild! – DDC

10:50 – She's going after the Clinton supporters that CNN keeps saying are drifting to McCain. – DDC

10:48 – As a callback to my 8:31 post, Jesse just leaned over to me and said "I told you! She did it!" – MK

10:35 – Michelle has a bouffant! A slight bouffant, but definitely a bouffant. Are they trying to present her as Jacqueline Kennedy? – DDC

10:34 – Go, Beavers! – DDC

10:28 - I asked Firedoglake editor egregious a question, hoping to trip her up, because I'm an asshole. She was talking about all this community's efforts to sway the country blue, and I asked her what she thought would happen when the country became a vast Democratic majority. Her response…

"In twenty years, when the Democrats have gotten fat and lazy, our children will vote them out… And they should."

Ha ha! I'm not gonna have kids, so she's wrong. – DDC

10:24 – How lucky can we be! I knew we were going to hear from Michelle tonight, but who knew I would get to hear from her mother! She sounds proud. I'd be proud if my kid married someone who would one day run for president. That is an accomplishment. Hillary did that. I'm proud of her.

10:21 – Claire McCaskill is doing an excellent job of saying everything that I expected to hear tonight. Way to meet expectations Claire! – MK

10:20 - Do you think senators sparkle in real life?

I have a feeling they do. – DDC

10:18 – Sorry the updates aren't coming so quickly. This is a considerably more distracting and entertaining environment to liveblog from than my work desk or my living room. There's all kinds of people here to talk to. And even a cynical as I am, I have to admit that it's a pretty cool environment. There's, like, hundreds of people here packed into this tent. But there's not, like, hundreds of different opinions here. That would be way too confusing.

There's just one opinion! And that's what's really cool! You can stop talking to one person and just pick up the conversation with some other person right where you left off. That's awesome! – DDC

9:38 - "You're Still the One"? Really?

No, really?

9:32 – Have you figured it out yet? Have you solved the Kennedy Code? This isn't actually about honoring the Kennedys, so much as it's about tying the Kennedy bloodline directly to Barack Obama.

This would work better if he'd just change his name to O'Bama. (Ow, I'm sorry for that.) – DDC

9:29 – The entire tent erupted into applause when Teddy Kennedy said "It's time now for Barack Obama!" And then again when he took the stage. Oh my god, even I feel like a conservative here. – DDC

9:23 – I think they hired the guy who makes the montages for the Academy Awards to make this Kennedy Memorial thing. It's kind of weird for them to be honoring the Kennedys in this way. They should at least have waited for Teddy to die for real. – DDC

9:20 – Michael is totally correct about Caroline Kennedy. It's weird, she's kind of reminding me of my ex-girlfriend in bed. (I'm kidding! My ex never looked happy in bed. (Thank you. I'll be here all week. (Actually, I will be here all week. (Let's just get one more parenthetical in here.)))) – DDC

9:16 – Caroline Kennedy sounds bored, but looks happy. – MK

9:13 – Ok, this is kind of annoying. As awesome as the Big Tent is, we are hearing audio streaming from the convention floor, but watching MSNBC. So I'm listing to Santana sing "Oye Como Va" while watching David Gregery interview John Kerry (I think). It's very Synaesthetic. – MK

8:56- Just spoke with Devilstower from Daily Kos. He had the luck to meet Darryl Hannah (click the link for an awesome picture) today while she was filming a piece for The Daily Show (I guess we'll see that later this week).

I asked him what to watch for tonight. He said he was just hoping that no one would suck and pointed me to this lovely poem. – MK

8:45 -Did I mention that we can't hear anything that's happening on the TV? As in anything that's happening in the convention. Nobody seems to be particularly concerned by this, however.

Here's Michael sitting next to egregious from Firedoglake, with the wide expanse of the Tent behind him. (I took five pictures trying to catch him without an idiotic expression on his face. This is the best one I got.)

Here's me, looking like me, standing next to mcjoan from Daily Kos. She was really, really nice to me and kind of seemed excited to talk to me. I think she thought I was Jon Stewart. Or Samantha Bee.

And here's me with Will from Daily Kos. Are you noticing a trend? (I'm 3 feet 2 inches tall.) – DDC

8:31 – Just spoke with Jesse Wendel, publisher of Group News Blog. He told me that the thing to watch for tonight is whether Michelle Obama is able to present herself as warm and kind and not all of the things the Republicans are trying to portray her as. He thinks she will. – MK

8:05 – Hi. Sorry so late in getting anything up on this liveblog of the DNC.

We just got into Digg's Big Tent, where it seems that every blogger who blogs for a blog is blogging about all the other bloggers who are blogging about blogs.

I have no idea what's going on in the actual convention, but there's no way it's more interesting than this right now. In seven minutes, I just met fifteen people whose work I've been reading for the past six years.

I'm gonna post some pics asap. Just try not to look at me. I look fat. – DDC
