That's right! None of these turkeys are from the inner-city.

Last year, Michael Kraskin pointed out here on this blog that in Bush's first seven years in office, not once did he pardon a non-caucasian turkey for Thanksgiving.

But, now, at Political Machine, he's showing us that the problem is much more systemic. It appears that no president since Harry Truman has pardoned a turkey of color. Not even Bill Clinton, our first black turkey president.

Let's hope that Barack Obama has the decency to make change happen and pardon, at least, a mixed-race turkey next year.

Well get cracking, hipster, because a trio of songwriters have done just that– in the form of their new triple CD "Of Great and Mortal Men"…

While some of the first 43 [presidents] have become larger-than-life figures, others are all but forgotten. But songwriters Christian Kiefer, Jefferson Pitcher and Matthew Gerken, with the help of many stalwarts of indie rock, look to shed light on the lives and quirks of these men. They've composed original songs and music in a new collection called Of Great and Mortal Men, which features 43 songs spanning three CDs and more than 220 years of American history.

Kiefer, Pitcher and Gerken — largely unknown even in indie rock circles– have enlisted the help of slightly more famous musicians to bring their songs to life.

So if you've always wanted to hear Smog's Bill Callahan sing about John Quincy Adams, the band Califone rock out for Andrew Jackson and Jimmy Carter, or Sun Kil Moon's Mark Kozelek croon over Harry Truman… Well now you can. (You'll have to buy the album if you want to know who plays on the Rutherford B. Hayes song.)

That's 43 songs to honor 42 presidents. (Grover Cleveland gets two, one for each useless term he served.) And then don't forget there's one more song to come after Election Day…

As for the 44th, the songwriters say they'll write one more song and post an MP3 sometime after Nov. 4.

Depending on who wins, that might not be necessary. If it's Ron Paul via write-in, his passionate supporters will no doubt be happy to contribute 2 to 400 dozen rousing paeans of their own.

And if John McCain wins, he could make history as the first president on the compilation to personally perform his own theme song.

Though the VP was little more than a figurehead in Wallace’s time, he didn't just sit on his ass and play golf, breaking the occasional tie in the Senate. Roosevelt put him to work, as chairman of the Board of Economic Warfare (BEW) and of the Supply Priorities and Allocations Board (SPAB) in 1941, both of which turned out to be influential positions in World War II. Thankfully, no VP since has had such power over doling out contracts during wartime. We’ve really dodged a bullet there.

Wallace was a strident Liberal who criticized the perpetrators of race riots in Detroit (during times of segregation), suggesting that it was difficult to fight the Nazis while condoning bigotry. And his 1943 goodwill tour of Latin America shored up support for the U.S. against the axis powers in WWII.

His outspokenness and public feuds with other officials ultimately cost him a shot at being president. In an effort to appease the Conservative side of his party, Roosevelt (widely assumed by the Democrats to be too ill to complete a fourth term if re-elected) stripped Wallace of his posts and abandoned him for Marcia, er, Truman in 1944.

He’s An Easy Rider! Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln are remembered as some of our greatest presidents, but they, too, had flaws. Namely, even their most loyal biographers will concede that none of them — even in times of war — were members of a motorcycle gang.

But that wussy tradition is finally broken because President Bush (never a man bound by the philosophies of his predecessors) has inhaled from the tailpipe of leadership and become an honorary member of Rolling Thunder! This means the next time you walk past The White House and hear loud revving noises, you shouldn't automatically assume that it's Dick Cheney's diesel-powered pacemaker. It could very well be the President testing out a new chopper and preparing for his post-executive life attending leather conventions and working security for The Rolling Stones.

Now critics will say that this is simply too little, too late for Bush, who probably didn’t know a Harley from a Toyota Prius up until now. But give the man credit for joining a community organization.

No, it isn't quite Harry Truman's coronation as "Honorary Grand Master" in Freemason society or James K. Polk's "OT III: Wall of Fire" certification in Scientology, but it sounds a hell of a lot more fun than that Eurotrash club Al Gore recently joined!

According to a new Gallup Poll, Bush's disapproval rating is now at 71% — setting the record for the highest disapproval rating of any modern President.

"No president has ever had a higher disapproval rating in any CNN or Gallup Poll; in fact, this is the first time that any president's disapproval rating has cracked the 70 percent mark," said Keating Holland, CNN's polling director.

Nevertheless, some White House insiders claim that Bush is nevertheless emboldened by a recent favorable review in Apocalypse Magazine which gave his presidency 3 and 1/2 Horsemen.
