Election Day

We know that November 3, 2009 isn't a real Election Day. But still, we can all pretend. Right? Take a look at these six elections and let us know how much you care.

Love, Look What You've Done to Mark Sanford

POSTED BY: Dennis DiClaudio

Lovelorn Gov. Mark Sanford — the Eva Peron of South Carolina politics* — may be reluctant to leave office since his drastic reversal of opinion on executive accountability, but his state's legislators don't seem to be feeling quite so weepy and forgiving of their head of state's various tresspasses.

In fact, they might even be willing to start tossing around The I Word* a little…

"Lawmakers, once reluctant to discuss removing Sanford, will weigh what it would take to force the Republican governor out and how the process would work."

"Sanford has been under fire since secretly leaving the country for five days in June to meet his lover and later admitting an extramarital affair with the Argentine woman. Since then, Sanford has been under fire for flying in expensive business-class seats and his use of state and private planes. All could violate state law or ethics rules."

This is exactly like Romeo & Juliet, except with less suicide-by-poison and more schadenfreude.

* His version of "Don't Cry for Me, South Carolina" always brings the state house down.
** And I'm not talking about "intercourse." Though I'm sure Gov. Sanford is.

Should We Impeach Barack Obama Right Away or Soon?

Colbert on the Clinton Curse

POSTED BY: Matt Tobey

It turns out Mark Sanford is just the latest in a long line of victims of the so-called Clinton Curse. I wasn't aware of that one, but I did hear about this guy down in Texas who picked up a woman in a bar and took her to a motel. The next morning, he woke up in a bathtub full of ice and on the bathroom mirror, scrawled in lipstick was, "WELCOME TO THE GOP." Ooh, just gave myself chills.

The Colbert Report airs Monday through Thursday at 11:30pm / 10:30c.

Putting the Cart Before the Horserace

POSTED BY: Matt Tobey

Is Obama President? Not yet, but that hasn't stopped some forward-thinking Republicans from getting an early jump on pushing for his impeachment. ObamaImpeachment.org exists. Though if the proprietors' fact-checking skills are as strong as their spell-checking ones, I don't think Senator Obama has much to worry about.

If you're upset you missed the boat on the URL, fret not. ImpeachPresidentZacEfron.net is still available.

George Bush and Dick Cheney Come Nanosteps Closer to Impeachment Today

POSTED BY: CubbyChaser

In what will now surely be a grand tradition of every American president fending off attacks of impeachment late in his or her second term, Rep. Dennis Kucinich is having his say today in a hearing for the House Judiciary Committee.

And it's drawing quite a crowd, hungry to see this moment in American infamy

A boisterous crowd has already gathered for today's hearing in the House Judiciary Committee on the case for impeaching Presidnent Bush and Vice President Cheney.

Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) has been leading the charge on the issue, and although Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-Mich.) have said there will be no formal impeachment hearings, they've given Kucinich and his allies a session today to make the case.

There are at least 100 people on line to attend the hearing, and the committee has announced that there will be two "overflow" rooms to accomodate everyone who wants to watch the proceedings.

Phenomenal! It's exactly the circus everybody was hoping it would be.

I can't imagine a better political move for the Democrats than to enter into a petty and useless endeavor like this with only half-a-year left in Bush's second term.

That's why we elected 'em!

If you'd like to see the hooplah for yourself, you can watch it here or listen here.
