Gettin' censured…

The Republican Party of Charleston, South Carolina has voted to censure Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) for working with Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) on cap-and-trade emissions legislation.

Sure, but why stop there? Bipartisan cooperation on climate change using facts and science is just the tip of the iceberg (Lindsey Graham). Here's a sampling of the other accusations the GOP (which, in our ongoing metaphor, would be the Titanic) has levied…

U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham has shown a condescending attitude toward his constituents by calling them "bigots" when they oppose his stance on amnesty for illegal aliens;

U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham has stated on many occasions that his primary concern is to "be relevant";

U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham – in the name of bipartisanship – continues to weaken the Republican brand and tarnish the ideals of freedom, rule of law, and fiscal conservatism.

It's hard to tell from the formal language of the censure resolution, but I'm pretty sure that "being relevant" part is what's most upsetting for the South Carolina GOP.

Relevance does seem to be the opposite of everything they stand for these days.

Now it all makes sense…

Despite all their tough filibustery talk, Senate Republicans yesterday threw in their respective towels, clearing Sonia Sotomayor for a quick confirmation vote before Congress recesses on August 7.

"Your judicial record strikes me as pretty much in the mainstream of judicial decision-making," said Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas. Added Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.: "You have, as a judge, been generally in the mainstream."

Oh really? Because that is the exact opposite of what scientific research says. When was the last time John Cornyn and Lindsey Grahamnesty set foot in mainstream America, anyway? Well, take heart, Mainstream-Americans. Someone's on your side…

From the outset, the National Rifle Association has respected the confirmation process and hoped for mainstream answers to bedrock questions. Unfortunately, Judge Sotomayor’s judicial record and testimony clearly demonstrate a hostile view of the Second Amendment and the fundamental right of self-defense guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution.

And so the NRA will not be voting for this terrible Constitution-hating judge.

Unless, of course, she proves her commitment to the Second Amendment by making good on her threat to shoot Tom Coburn.

Lindsey Graham and Joe Lieberman, the Statler and Waldorf of the Republipendent party, are mad as hell! And they'll stop at nothing to get their way, because this is the most important issue they've ever faced…

Time out. Anyone want to take a guess? Funding for children's health care? A program to help struggling homeowners? Public education? That delicious carrot cake they served in the Senate cafeteria last month?

legislation that would bar the release of photographs showing apparent U.S. abuses of suspected terrorist detainees.

Or, if you will, legislation that would get rid of pesky transparency, which everyone knows is a Socialist-type thing. So Sens. Statler and Waldorf wrote up an amendment about suppressing detainee photos and shoveled it into a pending war spending bill, only to have it removed by some of the closet Socialists in the House of Representatives, and now, I don't know, maybe Lindsey Graham will chain himself to a desk until Congress gives in.

As the angry duo said when they realized their amendment was going down:

“We will employ all the legislative means available to us including opposing the supplemental war spending bill and attaching this amendment, which was unanimously adopted by the Senate, to every piece of legislation the Senate considers, to be sure the President has the authority he needs not to release these photos and any others that would jeopardize the safety and security of our troops.

“The release of the photos will serve as propaganda and recruiting tool for terrorists who seek to attack American citizens at home and abroad."

It's simple logic. If photos of torture serve as terrorist propaganda, the only possible solution is to hide said photos, perhaps in Al Gore's old lockbox, where no one can see them.

Oh, sure, you could also stop torturing people, but that's no fun.

It's really too bad that President Obama decided to schedule a monthlong series of thumb-twiddling sessions for himself, just when Congress started working on the details of the economic stimulus plan. Why won't our lazy-ass commander-in-chief get off the sofa, brush the Doritos crumbs from his shirt, and do something?

President Obama has been "AWOL" in negotiations over the economic stimulus package, Sen. Lindsey Graham said Thursday in a scathing rebuke of the new president.

Wait, wait, it gets scathingier…

"This process stinks," Graham told FOX News, before repeating a lot of his criticisms on the Senate floor. "We're making this up as we go and it is a waste of money. It is a broken process, and the president, as far as I'm concerned, has been AWOL on providing leadership on something as important as this." [...]

"I like President Obama, but he is not leading. Having lunch is not leading … and doing TV interviews is not leading."

Sure.

But doing TV interviews about how other people doing TV interviews isn't leading, now, that's leadership.
