Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia recently argued that the cross is something of a universal symbol, not just reserved for Christians. And I think he has a point. After all, I've heard of large crosses being displayed in the front yards of people of many faiths. They're even lit on fire to insure everyone notices.

Yesterday, the Senate voted 68 to 31 in favor of confirming Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. This of course makes her the first Latina on the bench, if you don't count Oliver Wendell Holmes. While many conservatives are none too pleased with the appointment, I understand Antonin Scalia is quite optimistic, hoping Sotomayor ushers in an era of churros at the Thursday SCOTUS potlucks.

Since bipartisan cooperation is the only reason John McCain wakes up in one of his many houses each morning, the good senator from Arizona spent the weekend bitching about the Democrats' health care proposals, on television. But a crisis loomed in Washington!

So John McCain suspended his campaign for bipartisanship and raced back to the Senate to say that he, for one, will not stand for any wise Latinas sneaking into the Supreme Court of the United States (of AMERICA)…

Senator John McCain announced Monday that he will not vote for Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor to be confirmed later this week. [...] "I cannot support activist judges that seek to legislate from the bench," he said. "Judicial activism demonstrates a lack of respect for the popular will that is at fundamental odds with our republican system of government."

"Regardless of one's success in academics and in government service, an individual who does not appreciate the common sense limitations on judicial power in our democratic system of government ultimately lacks a key qualification for a lifetime appointment to the bench," McCain said.

Talk radio "activist judges" talking points aside, maybe that's McCain's problem with Sotomayor right there, the whole "success in academics and in government service" bit.

Because as we all know, he prefers to nominate people who don't do things like that.

How disgusted are you by the past several weeks' not-at-all moronic argument about exactly how racist and suppressive-of-white-people that Hispanic woman who's the first-ever Hispanic women to be nominated for the Supreme Court is? Very? Very very? I'm sorry.
